Kaydee Makes Herself at Home in Big Bear Nest, Then Shadow Pushes Back

Kaydee landed in the Big Bear nest with a thud and immediately went to work. On August 23, the young female eagle returned to the famous nest shortly after Shadow and immediately began wrestling with the large sticks piled along the right side. She pulled, lifted, untangled and repositioned branches while Shadow stood nearby watching every move.

For a while, he seemed content to let Big Bear’s newest branch manager handle the renovations. Then Shadow stepped back into the nest. And things got beaky.

Kaydee Goes Straight to Work at the Big Bear Nest

This was already Kaydee’s second visit to the nest Sunday, but this time Shadow was there with her. Standing beside him, the size difference was hard to miss. Kaydee is a large, powerful young female with thick legs, substantial feet and a strong beak built for exactly the kind of work she was about to tackle.

She wasted little time. Kaydee turned toward the tangled collection of branches on the right side of the nest and began pulling them apart. Some barely moved. Others came loose only after a serious wrestling match. But Kaydee kept going.

One large stick after another became part of her remodeling project as Shadow watched from nearby. It was an impressive display of strength, persistence and instinct from an eagle who has only recently begun making herself comfortable at this nest.

Shadow Lets the New Branch Manager Take Over

Shadow eventually moved onto the front porch, leaving Kaydee with plenty of room to work. But he wasn’t ignoring her. He continued watching as she pulled at the same sticks he and Jackie had spent years carrying, arranging and rearranging.

These were not simply branches. They were part of a nest built through years of storms, eggs, eaglets, victories and heartbreak with Jackie and Shadow working side by side.

Now another female eagle was standing among them. Kaydee cannot replace Jackie, and she does not need to. But she is beginning to leave her own mark on a place that has been at the center of Shadow’s life for years. And Shadow did not chase her away. Instead, he watched.

Then eventually, the longtime master of Big Bear stick placement could apparently resist no longer.

He came back.

Shadow Joins Kaydee Before Things Get Beaky

Shadow stepped into the nest and began working near Kaydee. For a brief stretch, the two eagles were moving sticks together. It was a small moment, but an interesting one. Kaydee has followed Shadow through the Big Bear habitat, perched near him, roosted close to him, visited his nest and repeatedly returned to the places he uses.

Now they were standing together in the nest doing something Jackie and Shadow had done countless times before. But this new partnership clearly still has some negotiating to do. As the two worked among the branches, their beaks suddenly came together in a quick disagreement.

Neither eagle appeared interested in surrendering much ground. Kaydee may be younger, but she certainly was not intimidated. And Shadow still had opinions about what was happening in his nest.

Kaydee Tries a Little Affection. Shadow Says No.

Then Kaydee tried something completely different. She reached toward Shadow and began gently nibbling and tugging at his feathers. Shadow was not receptive. He pulled away and eventually returned to the front porch.

Kaydee tried again later. Shadow again made his boundaries clear. It would be easy to turn moments like these into a human love story, especially after everything that has happened in Big Bear. But eagle behavior does not necessarily carry the same meaning people give it.

Late August is also well ahead of the stronger breeding and courtship activity expected later in the year. Whatever relationship may be developing between Kaydee and Shadow does not have to be decided today. For now, they appear to be learning each other. And sometimes that apparently includes a few beak-to-beak negotiations.

Shadow Comes Back One More Time

Perhaps the most interesting part came after Shadow had already retreated. He returned. Once again, the two eagles stood together among the sticks. At one point, they even worked on a branch at the same time.

Kaydee again attempted some feather nibbling, and Shadow again made it clear that he wanted some space.

Eventually he returned to the front porch. There was no dramatic romantic breakthrough. There was no definitive rejection either. Instead, there was something much more interesting to watch unfold in real time: two eagles figuring each other out.

Kaydee is becoming increasingly confident. Shadow is allowing her into places that have been central to his life for years. Neither one is following a script.

Seeing Another Female in Jackie and Shadow’s Nest Is Still Hard

For many people watching, the sight carries a weight that would not have existed only weeks ago. Jackie spent years in this nest beside Shadow.

She moved these sticks.

She raised eaglets here.

She weathered snowstorms here.

She and Shadow filled this tree with a relationship millions of people came to know through a camera. Seeing another female confidently rearranging the nest so soon after Jackie’s death can bring laughter one moment and a lump in the throat the next.

Both reactions can exist at once. Jackie’s place in the Big Bear story is already permanent. Nothing Kaydee does changes that. But the wild does not freeze when something is lost.

The sticks move.

The seasons change.

And life keeps arriving at the nest.

Kaydee Keeps Showing Up

That may be the biggest story of all. Kaydee keeps coming back. She has spent time near Shadow in his familiar trees. She has roosted nearby. She has followed him through the territory. She has visited the nest repeatedly.

And now she is no longer simply standing in it. She is working on it. That does not guarantee Kaydee and Shadow will become a breeding pair. The most revealing changes may not come until later in the year when bald eagle courtship and nesting behavior become stronger.

But something is clearly keeping Kaydee interested in this corner of Big Bear. Shadow, meanwhile, continues allowing her close. Some moments are peaceful. Some are awkward. Some apparently require a little beak diplomacy.

And that is exactly what makes this new chapter so difficult to stop watching.

Jackie’s chapter can never be rewritten.

But for the first time, Kaydee is beginning to write a few lines of her own.

And judging by those sticks, she brought a very big pencil.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What did Kaydee do at the Big Bear nest on August 23?

Kaydee returned to the nest shortly after Shadow and began moving, untangling and repositioning several large branches. She spent much of the visit actively working with the sticks while Shadow watched from the nest and front porch.

Did Shadow help Kaydee move sticks?

Yes. Shadow returned to the nest during Kaydee’s work and moved sticks himself. At one point, the two appeared to work on a branch together before their interaction became more beaky.

Why did Kaydee nibble Shadow’s feathers?

Kaydee reached toward Shadow’s feathers several times during the visit. Shadow did not appear receptive and moved away. It is too early to use one interaction to define their relationship, particularly because stronger seasonal courtship behavior is still ahead.

Are Kaydee and Shadow officially a pair?

Not yet. Their repeated time together, nest visits and close interactions are fascinating to watch, but their relationship is still developing. The coming fall and winter should provide much stronger clues about whether they form a lasting pair bond.

    Is Kaydee replacing Jackie?

No. Jackie was Shadow’s longtime mate and an irreplaceable part of the history of the Big Bear nest. Kaydee is a different eagle with her own personality and story. Whatever happens next can become a new chapter without erasing the one that came before.
